Don’t import firecrackers, cops warn
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Just over 36 hours after police seized more than $2million worth of fire crackers, newly promoted Senior Superintendent, Cornwall ‘Bigga’ Ford has warned that cops will step up their pressure on people bringing the items into the island.
SSP Ford, head of the Flying Squad today issued the warning just a day after a 52-year-old vendor Antonio Murdoch was arrested after he was found with firecrackers valued at $2 million in Gregory Park on Wednesday.
Police in St Catherine South said Murdoch has been charged with breaches under the Customs Act and possession of un-customed goods.
Reports are that a police team was conducting spot checks along the Gregory Park main road when they signaled a truck driven by Murdoch to stop. During a search of the vehicle, six barrels with over 600 parcels containing the firecrackers was discovered.
Following the arrest, police officers in several Divisions across the island have cautioned that they will continue to be vigilant in curtailing sale of the illegal items.
