EDWIN wants second title
HE school from Frankfield, Clarendon, last year shed their repeat runner-up status show us that they deserved the much-sought-after title of the island’s champion girl school in the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ & Girls’ Athletics Championships.
Edwin Allen, who celebrates their 49th year of existence this year, were emphatic in their toppling of former nine-time champions Holmwood, winning by over 130 points.
They led from start to finish to snatch their first-ever girls’ title in fine style at last year’s Champs.
On the cusp of a great mile Edwin Allen will be aiming to make themselves repeat girls’ champions from 2012. While Edwin Allen is a co-ed school, it will be the girls who will be hoping to carry the banner of the school to new heights.
After their victory last year, alum and Coach Michael Dyke foretold a 10-year reign as the queens of Champs. Having lauded their strong athlete base which is said to have lost only a small percentage from last year, Coach Dyke and the Edwin Allen girls will be coming with a point to prove this year.
The Clarendonians will have to show their competitors and themselves that they can indeed start an empire and repeatedly win Girls’ Champs’ with the same or even greater dominance than that previously shown by schools such as Holmwood.
They will come this year with a ‘chip’ on their shoulder. They must prove that they are not one-time performers, and to be truthful most critics expect them to.
However, supporters will be hoping that Edwin Allen will fulfil their potential, and they will hope to see the National Stadium steeped in the blue of Frankfield Clarendon on March 16. They will also be expecting big performance from stars such as Saqukine Cameron who will probably be competing in the Class Two 200m, 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m relays.
Another athlete of whom big things will be expected is top middle-distance athlete, Marleena Eubanks who is down to compete in the Class One 800 metres, 1,500 metres and Open 3,000 metres.
