Teen Voices: Men’s netball in Jamaica?
The issue has been raised in Jamaica about having an organised male netball team. Though the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) does not have it as priority, they are not totally against the idea.
It is a fact that netball is a female-dominated sport, however, it has been argued that in countries such as Australia and New Zealand, male netball is actually doing well with teams travelling to international tournaments. Given the history of the sport and a reportedly homophobic Jamaican point-of-view, having a male version to the Sunshine Girls would definitely raise a few eyebrows.
With this point being raised, JNA President Marva Bernard noted that it would be better to have a mixed team.
“Mixed netball is something that would be pioneering here, but is not new to the sport. It teaches boys how to integrate with girls, so that is a product that we have to sell.”
TEENage would like to know what you think: Do you think the JNA should really consider implementing a men’s netball team?
The sport is indeed female dominated, however, for a country like Jamaica that does really great in most areas of sports then why not? Putting aside the whole notion of homosexuality, I think once the sport being played by males seems masculine then it will be ok. Girls play football and other male-dominated sports, however, I think once the international arena makes a greater mention of it then we would accept it.

No, they should not consider it. Netball is too feminine. The jumping up and “spread out” and overall technique of the game just does not suit males and even though women play masculine sports, it just doesn’t look that bad.
Catrina Hyde
Yes, I think they should. It will give Jamaica a bigger face in the global spotlight for something positive and overall help both players of the game and the economy.
Corey Dunkley
No, they should not. Not only is Netball historically and predominantly a female sport, but such a move by the JNA would only be taking away the aesthetic appeal of the sport of netball as it would no longer be unique.
Raheem Morrison
A men’s netball team should be considered because observing some guys playing it I realise it is fun, a little aggressive, but very entertaining and not awkward like how I previously thought, if men are involved.
Antonio Ricketts
Implementing a men’s netball team is not a necessity. There are enough sports men can be a part of and netball is already labelled as a female sport. No need to change the culture of that. I think basketball is good enough for them. Implementing this will not significantly improve the countries state of dilemma.
