DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — National player Yannick Elliott has been in eye-catching form with the ball since his recent return to Melbourne CC’s first team.

So much so that club president Neville Atkinson has labelled Elliott’s accomplishment as the “success story of the season”.

Before yesterday’s final against Westmoreland CC, the off-spinner — on the mend after suffering a stroke three months ago — has accounted for nine wickets in five matches in the 50-overs club cricket competition, including a best of 4-26 in last weekend’s semi-final versus St Ann CA.

In yesterday’s final he grabbed three for 44 to help Melbourne to victory.

Despite the praises headed his way, the 26-year-old said the improvement is part of an ongoing process. “Things are getting better as the days go by. It’s still not 100 per cent, but things are feeling better as I get more action and my bowling progresses. It’s good to know that though I suffered from a mild stroke now I’m doing fairly well,” Elliott told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

During the Easter holiday, Elliott was admitted to the Kingston Public Hospital after initially complaining of not feeling well one evening after cricket practice. He also developed complications to the left side of his body, which included limited use of his left arm.

The young all-rounder was subsequently treated for stroke — a condition which occurs when blood clots affect blood flow to an area of the brain.

Elliott modestly suggested that simplicity and commitment has fuelled his exploits.

His hope is that soon he can iron out all the shortcomings in his bowling action. “I always give my all and it feels very good to have this comeback. I’m just doing the simple things right now.

“My left hand is coming up (during the bowling action) now. Perhaps my teammates have been noticing more than I have, but it is coming up more often than not. I’m just hoping that as time goes by things will fall back into place,” he said.

The former Norman Manley High student has played three 50-overs and two Twenty20 matches for his country and captured 2-49 in last season’s Regional Super50 win over the Leeward Islands at Sabina Park.
