The styles rocked at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week (NYFW) proved beyond doubt that the runway is not just a stage for fashion — it is also an amazing showcase of beauty and hair inspiration.

From the effortless to the intricate, this season’s catwalks featured models sporting an interesting mix of subtle effects, like the sophisticated chignons at Jenni Kayne, as well as more whimsical styles like the gold-dusted dos at Lela Rose and the itty-bitty floral pins tucked into ponytails at Honor. We’re sharing the secrets of five of the most swoon-worthy runway looks at NYFW.

Spray-on hair colour stripes at OHNE TITEL

One of the best things about NYFW is getting the chance to preview products on the runway before they’ve made their debut in stores. To reinforce the architectural theme found in Ohne Titel’s Spring 2014 collection, hairstylist Jimmy Paul went for Bumble and Bumble’s spanking new spray chalk — which will be available in salons at the end of September — to add cobalt and blush-coloured lines to the models’ slicked-back chignons. It’s a bold style that’s not to be worn every day but can certainly add some dramatic flair when heading out for a night on the town. 1 Apply a generous amount of Bumble and Bumble Gel and pull hair tightly into a bun, tying it into a simple knot at the end and finishing with Bumble and Bumble Spray de Mode.

2 Once hair is dry, apply spray chalk in lines that are thinner in the front of the head and grow thicker as they reach the back of head, using white sheets of paper as stencils.

When the temperatures begin to rise, we’re all about cute and playful updos, and it has been a sizzling summer. The glitzy coifs at Lela Rose, created to complement her modern yet dreamy collection inspired by the mid-century modern furniture of Arne Jacobsen, certainly caught our attention. Stylist Ted Gibson sprinkled flecks of gold onto the voluminous strands to create a fairy dust effect, with the flakes fluttering to the ground as the models strutted down the runway.

Child-like centre parts and tousled chignons were paired with vibrant eye make-up for a spring look that will not be easily forgotten. You can achieve this look by using a curling iron to create waves, backcombing the wavy portion of hair, and then sprinkling the aureate leaf flakes atop the nest of teased hair. We’ll show you how.

1 Apply Ted Gibson Build It Blow Drying Agent to prep hair before blowing out.

2 Create a deep centre part, applying Ted Gibson Fix It Gel to smooth flyaways.

3 Use a small curling iron to create a wave; starting from the ears and going down to create differentiating textures.

4 Back-comb the wavy portion of the hair to create volume and texture and finish with Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hair Spray.

5 Secure hair with an elastic band, folding the hair on top of itself and pinning in place to create a faux bob.

6 Optional: Sprinkle small flakes of gold leaf on the textured portion of the hair to finish!

A ponytail is not exactly what one might think of when imagining trendsetting styles for spring, but if the Honor Spring 2014 show taught us anything it’s that the ponytail has been reborn.

Hairstylist James Pecis and his team added itty-bitty blooms — glued onto bobby pins —to tousled, asymmetric ponytails for a flirty, flower-child look. To match the natural flow of the locks, Pecis placed each individual flower in the hair. This is one of the simplest styles to recreate at home.

1 Build volume at the roots, by using Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray while blow-drying.

2 Create a side part, brush hair into a side ponytail and loosely curl to add waves. Secure with an elastic ponytail holder.

3 Glue flower stickers onto individual bobby pins. Floral hair stickers are also an option for those who might not have the time for a mini DIY project.

4 Place pins in hair, following the flow of the hair in an asymmetrical fashion.

The top knot is, without a doubt, as versatile as a little black dress. It’s a classic style that women turn to every now and then. Inspired by old photos of Sophia Loren and classic ’60s film cinema, models at Kate Spade wore gorgeous, softly tousled top knots.

On casual days, a tousled top knot can look effortlessly sexy, and adding a personal twist makes it your very own. Finishing the look off with a pretty bow, a glitzy rhinestone barrette or even fashionable bobby pins can be a winning fashion statement. Hairstylist Tommy Buckett created the roughed-up buns at Kate Spade by sweeping models’ hair up and off their shoulders and twirling it into thick, chunky knots.

1 Prep hair with Garnier Fructis Style Surfer Hair Power Putty.

2 Using just your hands, rake the front of your hair to one side (to get the soft swirl), then loosely pull your hair up into a high ponytail and tie it with an elastic band.

3 Wrap the length of your ponytail around the base of the elastic. If you’re up for a challenge, leave a piece out when wrapping your pony around the elastic. Tuck in a few hairpins around the base to keep your hair in place.

4 Braid the piece of hair that you left out earlier and wrap it around the base of the bun (like in Step 3). Secure your updo with U-shaped hairpins and finish with a spritz of hairspray — like the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Sleek Finish 5-in-1 Serum Spray — all over for stronger hold and extra shine.

Drawing inspiration from legendary Mexican visual artist Frida Kahlo for the bold prints and intricate embroidery featured in her Spring 2014 show, Rebecca Minkoff also had TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu incorporate Kahlo’s iconic halo braids into her runway look. While the artist would have accentuated the braids by adding flowers or weaving a bright scarf in them, Syfu took the pared-down simple approach, creating a chic fishtail braid crown with a deep side part, a look that’s all too easy to replicate at home.

2 Create a messy zig-zag part from hairline to nape and clip to separate.

3 From the heavier side of the part, create another zig-zag section behind the ear and clip, creating three sections.

4 Back-brush hair for texture and fullness and create a ponytail in each section, positioned just behind the ears (two on one side, one on the other).

5 Tease lengths of hair and spray lightly with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.

6 Create a four-strand braid with each ponytail and fasten with an elastic band.

7 Wrap braids around the top of the head, tucking the end of the braids under and fastening with bobby pins.

8 Finish with TRESemmé Fresh Start Colour Care Dry Shampoo for a matte, undone look.
