Hillel sweep ClayFeva 2014 as individual champs dethroned
HILLEL Academy continued their dominance of the sporting clays as they came out on top in all the major categories at the third staging of ClayFeva.
This was the first tournament in the “Mini Olympics” being organised by the American International School of Kingston (AISK) — the 2014 Lasco Food Drink SportsFeva presented by Gatorade.
The tournament saw Hillel emerge as the overall school champion, in addition to having the champion boy and champion girl.
Brandon Reid was crowned the top shooter of the day after besting his competitors in the Super Six. The round was contested by the shooters with the top six scores throughout the day — Brandon, Nicholas Chen, Isaac Mair, Todd Lazarus, Luke Chin and Peter Mahfood (Hillel), and Zachary Hughsam of AISK.
After 50 attempts in the first round, the shooters were required to attempt another 18 clay birds, with their scores from this added to their initial totals. In the end, Brandon emerged on top with an overall score of 63 (after shooting 47 clay birds during the first round) to unseat reigning champion Nicholas, who had a score of 60.
Zachary was third with an overall 59.
Reigning champion Alysia Evans of Manchester High was ousted in the girls’ category, as Sofia Asher of Hillel emerged the top female shooter. She registered 40 hits from her 50 attempts, with close competition coming from teammate Leah Azan and Ashleigh Azan of AISK, who shot 39 and 38, respectively.
Other stand-out performers on the day were Matthew Josephs (in the sub junior B class) and Mark Desnoes (in the sub junior C class) — both from Hillel, with similar totals of 48 of 50 clay birds.
Hillel Academy ended the tournament with 250 points, with AISK tallying 90 and Campion College, 30. Cassandra Chin shot 30 of 50 to top the girls’ A class, giving Campion their only podium finish of the day.
There was a huge turnout from supporters and sponsors alike, as patrons witnessed over 60 shooters take to the course. Tournament director Khaleel Azan did not see as close a competition as he would have wanted among the schools, but he acknowledged that he expected the gap to close gradually as the years go on.
The next tournament on the schedule is GolfFeva, which will swing into action on Saturday at the Constant Spring Golf Club.
