VCB targets World Indoors
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The way could be cleared for two-time defending champion Veronica Campbell Brown to defend her IAAF World Indoors 60m title in Sopot, Poland, next month after she was cleared yesterday of doping violations by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
Claude Bryan, Campbell Brown’s agent, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday they had informed the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) of the CAS decision and indicated the athlete’s availability to take part in the championships set for March 7-9.
Bryan was responding to the question of where would the 31-year-old make her seasonal debut after being sidelined since last May when she returned a positive test for the diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide at the Jamaica International Invitational held at the National Stadium.
“It will be up to the JAAA to decide as we have indicated her availability for the World Indoors,” Bryan said.
A statement from the JAAA yesterday over the signature of General Secretary Garth Gayle confirmed the receipt of the notification and said: “The award handed down in Lausanne on February 24, 2014, effectively clears the athlete of the charges levelled against her and also clears the way for her to return to active competition, including participation in the World Indoors Championships.”
Bryan confirmed that Campbell Brown, who won back-to-back 60m titles in Doha, Qatar, in 2010, and Istanbul, Turkey, two years ago, has been in training since last year.
Campbell Brown ran 7.00 seconds to win the 2010 gold medal in Doha, beating American Carmelita Jeter and Gabon’s Ruddy Zang Milama, and returned two years later to win with 7.01 seconds, beating Ivorian Murielle Ahoure and Tianna Madison Bartoletta of the USA.
The Jamaican team to the IAAF World Indoors is expected to be named later this week.
