Ganja worth $10m found at Kingston Wharf
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A two-day operation at the Kingston Container Terminal in the nation’s capital has resulted in the seizure of ganja worth over $10 million and the arrest of one person.
Reports from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division are that the operation was launched on Friday, February 28, with personnel from that Division being assisted by the Ports Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) of Jamaica Customs. During several extensive searches, 2168 pounds (983.39 kilograms) of ganja were seized.
The cops say that 727 pounds were discovered about 3:00 pm on Friday in a 40-foot container that originated in Panama and was bound for Mexico. Another 677 pounds were seized about 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 1, hidden in barrels on another container, which was also bound for Mexico. A third cache of the drug, weighing approximately 764 pounds was found in travelling bags inside a container that was destined for the United Kingdom.
The identity of the man in custody is being withheld by the police as investigations are ongoing.
