Cocktails With – Selena Chin

It’s a glorious night for Sagicor executive financial advisor Selena Chin. She’s over the moon, and justifiably so, having just copped the company’s prized R Danny Williams trophy at the glitzy annual corporate awards last Wednesday evening at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel for her impressive sales performance. We share couch space in the Pegasus lobby with the award-winning Chin to gauge thoughts on feeling victorious and what’s next.

What are you sipping?

A glass of Merlot.

Loving your statement-making dress. Who are you wearing?

I’m wearing a dress from Angela’s boutique. She did a wonderful job in ensuring I looked fabulous tonight.

Congratulations on your award. How’s your evening going?

I’m having a fabulous night. I’m honoured to have received the award because it’s the result of the hard work I’ve put in. I was rewarded for it accordingly.

What’s been your experience working with Sagicor?

I’m nearing the six-year mark working with Sagicor. It’s been a great experience. I would advise anyone to consider this not just as a job but also as a career. The earning potential and recognition are wonderful. The places you see and people you meet are even better.

Last year was a good year. I was a record breaker for November 2013 and I’m also a repeat President of the Century Club, and winner of the R Danny Williams trophy, which means I brought in the most cases in the company.

How many cases were those?

I did almost 500 for the year, so it was an exceptional year for me. I’m happy like a room without a roof.

What perfume are you wearing?

Sex In The City.

Who does your hair?

Natalie Tomlinson of Extremely Elegant in Baron’s Plaza.

Who does your nails?

My nails are done at Amandel’s. Pamela Clarke does my manicure and Tanika Bailey, my pedicure.

In a down economy, why should life insurance still be considered relevant?

It is still relevant because life is still unpredictable and that is why a company such as Sagicor thrives. It is at this time when the economy is experiencing what it is now that you need to protect yourself. Insurance ensures that there is peace of mind. It is not for the person who dies, it is for the persons who are left behind. None of us get up and expect to become sick, have an accident or die and, most times, any of those situations are very expensive. The only thing that can stand strong is your life insurance.

Is it easier being a woman selling insurance?

It’s not easier but an obstacle is an opportunity, so I don’t pay attention to the fact that I’m a female. It’s a little harder but I don’t focus on that. Sometimes the men will get ahead but we as females are just as powerful as they are.

Who is your life inspiration?

I have so many but the person who changed my life, and that’s when I started to become an award-winning agent, was Derek Mills who wrote a book The Ten Second Philosophy and he’s the standard guy. He says set high standards and stick to them, don’t put up success for the future, put it on now and it will make room for you. He said that one line and it changed my thoughts and the entire world around me.

How does Selena the career girl unwind?

I love having a good glass of red wine, watching a good movie, driving to the country and spending time with my family. Christmas is my favourite time of the year, you are focused so much on meeting quota, but I get to unwind and play Taboo, which I’m good at, and just laugh.

You have a job quota that you must satisfy. What is your current life checklist?

On the top of my things to do this year is to acquire my first home. I’m also trying to be a better me. I tend to be fast-moving and I’m trying to slow down and bring balance to my life because I have been told I’m a workaholic.

What’s your idea of the perfect date?

A nice walk on the beach and a lovely dinner.

What’s your idea of the perfect man?

It takes a strong man to support a strong woman, especially a woman who is shining, so my ideal man is supportive and willing to stand behind and not be intimidated.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I will still be in this job because it’s a career. By then I should also have acquired another piece of real estate and should be married and hopefully be mother to another child.
