Jamaica Observer online readers are overwhelmingly in agreement with a call from retired senior cop Reneto Adams for entertainer Vybz Kartel to be sentenced to no fewer than 50 years for murder. The readers were responding to a story carried yesterday in which Adams declared that the panel of jurors, who found Vybz Kartel and three other men guilty of the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, had done the country a favour. Here are some edited comments:

Thank you, Mr Adams, you’re a brave man. I am saying one year for every piece that they cut off the slain man . They said they cut him up in pieces. I am crying tears to know that this generation is that cruel to another human.

Mr Adams, I could not agree with you more and also included in the sentence he should five days per week go into the schools and lecture the youths on the dangers of skin bleaching, promiscuity, guns, and gangs!

Mr Adams, I agree with your commentary. However, he should be considered a dangerous offender and therefore be locked away indefinitely. We have to send the memo to so-called dons. Only God knows who else Mr. Palmer killed. His conversations, too, should be monitored just in case he tries to exact retribution, no cellular phones or recording devices of any kind and read his letters for codes and threats.

Appoint Adams as a senator, then take the minister of national security job from Bunting and give it to crime-fighter Adams.

Crime, at the stage it is right now, needs to be fought severely. Declare war on criminals then pray for prosperity.

Looking far and beyond

How about a minimum of 25 years before any talk about parole? This should be a norm for any murder conviction. We have to start somewhere and please note that Jamaica has some of the most brutal murderers in the world today. We have to ask the question, are those people human?.

@Looking far and beyond: Come on man, you mean to add another 25-years to the 50 he expect to receive, making it 75, years instead. He must not be allowed to sing any songs in jail, or to hold another piece of musical instrument. The punishment must be so tough that it will send a good message to the others, who could be involved in this kind of horrendous attack on their brothersandsisters. der 50 years, and 15 years are too short a time for parole eligibility. At lest 25 years before they can apply for parole. The convicts mentioned above by Mr Adams were given too short a sentencing. My preference is that these thugs be given death sentence for the pain the inflicted on the nation.

Adams is right. Kartel should get no less than 50 years as he said he is world boss. The judge must make an example out of him and his cronies.

Lord addy man! 50? Not even 20? A so him bad! If him read dis him supposed to faint in a him cell! All I can say is that too many of our youths have lost their sense of dignity, consciousness and will have to pay the hard way.

I don’t know now if it matters to crime whether Kartel spends 50 years, 25 years, or even 15 years in prison. What matters most to Jamaicans is the fact that a message has been sent to wrongdoers that the wholesale ‘dissing’ of the country’s constitution is over. You can no longer go around killing people and expect to hire your top gun fleet of lawyers and just walk away and laugh at society. This is what the upcoming wrong doers are looking out for, whether the system has the nerve to lock them away. In a few weeks kartel like Dudus and the others will be forgotten and the number of years will only serve for statistic purpose.
