High jump record ‘surprises’ Hydel’s Salmon
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Hydel High School’s Shian Salmon was as surprised as anyone else after she broke the Girls Champs Class 3 high jump record Thursday morning with a clearance of 1.78m passing the 1.77m set in 2009 by former Holmwood Technical star Janieve Russell.
Salmon, who came into the championships with a personal best 1.70m and was tipped to take the silver medal, upset the seeding as pre-Champs favourite Lamara Distin of Rusea’s High was second with 1.70m beating Edwin Allen’s Shania Ingram on the count back for the silver medal.
A happy Salmon who cleared the new record height on her first attempt told OBSERVER ONLINE “I feel good, I feel outstanding,” adding she had not cleared 1.75m all season and surprised herself when she cleared the height.
The 14-year-old who also won at Class 4 in 2012 is now looking ahead and hopes to represent the country at international events.
