Gareth Henry advances in Cuba tourney
JAMAICA’S Gareth Henry advanced to the third round of the Men’s singles, while sister Geordine Henry, and Samuel Ricketts were beaten in the Women’s and Men’s singles, respectively, in the 2014 XV Giraldilla Badminton Tournament in Havana, Cuba yesterday.
Gareth, who got a bye in the first-round, defeated number five seeded Giovanni Greco of Italy 25-23, 21-13 to progress in the championship. He will face Bryan Veliz Arbolay of Cuba in the third round today.
Meanwhile, Geordine, who won her first-round match comfortably, was beaten by number one seed Maja Tvrdy of Slovenia 7-21, 9-21. Geordine will now focus on the Mixed double later on in the tournament with her brother.
Another Jamaican, Ricketts, also crashed out when he lost 16-21, 9-21 to Nelson Javier of the Dominican Republic in the Men’s singles. Ricketts will now focus on the Men’s doubles with Gareth later on in the tournament.
