Waterhouse defeat Arnett in Premier League semi final
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Waterhouse FC defeated hosts Arnett Gardens FC 2-1 in Monday night’s second leg encounter at the Anthony Spaulding Complex to progress to the final of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), though proceedings were marred by ugly scenes after the final whistle.
The win for Waterhouse gave them a 5-4 advantage on aggregate after the teams ended 3-3 in the first leg at the Drewsland Stadium last week.
On Monday, captain Damarley Samuels gave Waterhouse the lead in the fifth minute with a close range blast.
Thereafter Waterhouse totally dictated proceedings in the first half, creating chance after chance, but failed to add to their slim lead.
They were made to sweat when Arnett Gardens substitute Marcelino Blackburn sent in a 54th minute free kick from deep on the right side which eluded everyone and went into the goal.
But Juvaune Benjamin, who missed several good opportunities throughout the match, scored the winner for the visitors with a stooping header 15 minutes before the close.
While the game was action-packed and exciting, the after-match events left a sour taste in the mouths of many as Arnett Gardens supporters took out their ire on the match officials, throwing bottles and verbal threats their way.
The officials and a few political figures had to be escorted, under heavy guard, away from the venue. Several explosions similar to the sound of gun shots were heard during the melee and shards of broken glass were visible on the playing field. OBSERVER ONLINE could not confirm if anyone was hurt.
Waterhouse will battle Montego Bay United in the final next Sunday at a venue to be announced.
