Costa Rica upset Uruguay 3-1
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Costa Rica humbled the highly fancied Uruguay 3-1 in Group D led by a superb performance from Joel Campbell Saturday in Brazil’s 2014 World Cup tournament.
The CONCACAF minnows came from a goal down to shock the South American champions who ended the game in embarrassment and with ten men after a defender chopped down Costa Rica danger man Campbell in time added on.
Costa Rica was punished in the 23rd minute of the game after Junior Diaz grabbed an attacker in the box, resulting in a penalty to send Uruguay one up.
The first half ended 1-0 and Uruguay seemed on their way to an expected win.
But Campbell had other ideas and eight minutes into the second half unleashed a well placed shot from just outside the box to equalise.
With Campbell’s goal and his constant pestering of the Uruguay defence the Costa Ricans lifted their game, giving as much as they got, and more.
Four minutes after the equaliser Oscar Duarte sent the Central Americans ahead and the Uruguay into shock with a diving header to the far corner.
Midway the second half Uruguay threw everything at their opponents. But the Costa Ricans responded with a third goal in the 84th minute.
Campbell was again involved as he split the Uruguay defence with a pass that saw substitute Marco Urena running on to slice in from the acutest of angles to end the upset 3-1.
Italy and England are the other two teams in the difficult group.
