Jamaica capture gold, silver at Pam Am Champs
JAMAICA’S pair of Samuel Ricketts and Sean Wilson defeated the USA’s pair of Timothy Lam and Justin Ma 21-16, 21-15 in the final of the Under-19 mixed doubles for the country’s first and only gold medal at the 2014 Pan American Junior Badminton Championships in Guatemala yesterday.
The dynamic duo dominated the game from start to finish, giving little away as they easily won the first set 21-16 to take the lead in the best-of-three sets.
The pair continued their destructive path, and as they did in the first set, easily won the second set to take the well-deserved gold medal at the championships.
Earlier, Ricketts took silver in the Under-19 men’s singles, after going down 20-22 and 13-21 to Lam in the final.
Ricketts fought hard but lost a close first set before losing the second to claim the silver medal.
Both Ricketts and Wilson, along with the rest of the team, will return home and turn their attention to the Social Development Foundation (SDF)/National Commercial Bank (NCB) Caribbean Badminton Championships, scheduled for August 7-15 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium.
