Tallawahs impress coach Arthur at Sabina
JAMAICA Tallawahs head coach Mickey Arthur was mostly pleased with his team’s performance after sealing three wins on home soil at Sabina Park in Kingston.
The Tallawahs, the defending champions of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL), recorded victories over Antigua Hawksbills, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents.
The Amazon Warriors and the Tridents were restricted to scores of 137-9 and 128-6, respectively. The hapless Hawksbills were held to 89-9 in 17 overs in that rainaffected encounter.
The series of positive outcomes pushed the Jamaica franchise to 12 points from seven games in the 2014 CPL Twenty20 tournament, only behind leaders Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel due to an inferior net run-rate.
Arthur identified the stifling bowling performance and the generally safe fielding as main contributors to the results at Sabina Park.
“I was really happy with our bowling performance in Jamaica…the bowling was exceptional. I was really happy with the energy in the field…it was fantastic,” he told reporters in the postmatch interview on Sunday.
The Tallawahs batsmen, however, oftentimes struggled for timing on a slow batting track and failed to consistently pick up singles when the boundaries dried up.
Arthur praised the home fans for their inspirational support, culminating in the raucous cheers as pacer Jerome Taylor stormed in to bowl the last over against Barbados Tridents on Sunday.
He argued that the batsmen will get it right and make the Tallawahs into an “unstoppable” force.
“It was a tough surface to bat on. We showed glimpses of our batting and when we put together the perfect game this team is going to be unstoppable… when it all clicks, it is going to be pretty exciting.
“It [the support] was amazing. Just that atmosphere when Jerome ran in to bowl the last over …was as good as it gets anywhere in the world.
The crowd really embraced us,” Arthur said. The players, led by captain Christopher Gayle, circled the field after the Tridents win to show appreciation to fans and sponsors.
The Tallawahs next face St Lucia Zouks at Warner Park in St Kitts, before closing out the preliminary phase against the Tridents a day later at the same venue.
The top team at the end of the round-stage automatically advances to the championship match on August 16.
The third and fourthplaced franchises will playoff on August 13 for a chance to challenge the secondplaced team in a semi-final on August 14.
