Two murders on Independence Day
KINGSTON, Jamaica – As Jamaica celebrated its 52nd year of Independence on Wednesday, August 6, the police had their hands full dealing with several incidents of major crime committed across the island.
The police had to respond to two murders, one shooting and a robbery on the day.
In one incident the body of a man was found dumped in a gully in Kingston; another man was fatally stabbed at his home in Nain, St Elizabeth while gunmen injured another in St Catherine; and a female was robbed in St Andrew in a late evening attack.
According to the police’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the body of an unidentified male – believed to be in its late 30s, of dark complexion, stout built and 5 feet 11 inches long – was found in Olympic Gardens, St Andrew about 8:45 am wrapped in a white sheet.
CCU did not divulge further information regarding the killing, but OBSERVER ONLINE has learnt that when the body was inspected, its hands and feet were bound and there were stab wounds to the abdomen and what appeared to be a bashed-in forehead.
Meanwhile, in Nain, 30-year-old Dwayne Lennon, also known as ‘Drughead’, was in his yard when he was attacked and stabbed around noon.
His attacker fled the scene. Lennon was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
About the same time, a man was injured in a shooting attack at Caymanas in St Catherine. It is reported that the man was walking along the road when gunmen approached him and fired shots hitting him in the buttocks.
And about 8:00pm a woman was held-up and robbed in a St Andrew community.
The police confronted the alleged culprits, during which one was shot and injured. A homemade firearm was taken from him.
