EDWARD Seaga is expected to step down from his position as chairman of the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) after six years at the helm, the Jamaica Observer has learnt.

When reached yesterday, PLCA secretary Clyde Jureidini refused to confirm or deny that Seaga is resigning from the post, even as news of the impending departure was making the rounds.

The PLCA official preferred to say that he is “awaiting the release” as he is “yet to be notified if such a move will take place”.

The Observer further understands that Seaga, a former prime minister of Jamaica, has requested that the PLCA look for a new chairman as he may not be able to continue in the position. A press release was said to be forthcoming to address the matter.

It is not certain if Seaga’s position with the twinned Professional Football Association of Jamaica (PFAJ) will be impacted by his departure.

Efforts to contact Seaga yesterday for comment proved futile as his cellphone went straight to voicemail.

In addition to that, the Tivoli Gardens Football Club, of which the 84-year-old Seaga is president, has withdrawn from the Red Stripe Premier League.

A club official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that players were advised that the club will be withdrawing due to financial constraints.

The well-placed individual revealed that players are “distraught” by the possibility of their beloved club’s withdrawal from the nation’s topflight, where it has been a many-time champion and perennial title contender.

Despite the fact that they can play at other clubs, the “committed” players are said to be taking the new developments “hard”. The official went on to add that the club “will be missed” from the nation’s top flight league.

The Observer also failed in its attempts to contact Tivoli Gardens FC manager Brian Rose for comment, as his cellphone, too, appeared to be turned off.
