THE Police High Command said yesterday that it will continue to maintain a high presence in major towns, business districts and communities, in an effort to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.

“As we continue our efforts to disrupt and dismantle criminal gangs, we will increase the operational tempo by utilising crime-reduction initiatives that have worked. We will endeavour to deny gangs their freedom to move about to kill or harm citizens, and we will ensure they are prevented from enjoying the proceeds of their crimes,” said Acting Commissioner Glenmore Hinds.

It was, however, not clear what prompted the Police High Command to issue the assurance to the public yesterday.

However, the acting police chief, in a release yesterday, said the police would continue to disrupt activities of criminal organisations.

At the same time, the Police High Command said that although the police are the chief guardians of law, order and public safety and security, citizens should play their part by taking the necessary steps to ensure their personal safety, reporting suspicious activities and supporting the “investigative process”.

“While the various counter-gang initiatives and crime-reduction strategies employed across the country continue to bear fruit, evidenced by a significant decrease in all categories of major crimes, including murder, the police will be unrelenting in their efforts to secure citizens and visitors. Additionally, police operations for the period January 1 to August 9, 2014 have resulted in the seizure of 387 illegal firearms and 6,700 rounds of ammunition,” said the release.
