UWI/UTech Sports Championship today
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 5th annual renewal of the UWI/UTech Sports Championships will be staged today on the grounds of the University of the West Indies, Mona.
There will be competition in seven disciplines at the varsity championship and participation is expected to surpass others. The event which, is sponsored by Bill Express, will also feature a lunch-hour concert with Dburnz and the Flash Mob band, as part of the entertainment package.
The championships have been won by Mona Pelicans on three occasions, with defending champions UTech Knights winning once.
According to Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, the deputy principal of the UWI, the championships are not an end in themselves but another vehicle through which to deepen the relationship that is being built on “a compelling need to satisfy one single goal — that is to provide the best higher education that this region has to offer”.
Kahwa added: “Both our institutions have successfully created a higher education environment in Jamaica that is virtually unrivalled throughout the Caribbean. Collectively, we have become a formidable force in education producing graduates who are not only well trained in their particular profession, but who possess the knowledge and skills that will easily allow them to competitively manoeuvre the international job market and research markets.”
