Cocktails With – Danah Lawson-Chisholm
The bubbly Danah Lawson-Chisholm was out accompanying her bestie, Sabritru retailer Trusha Beecham, to the Jamaica Observer Takes Style Out launch last Monday at J Wray & Nephew’s oh-so-chic HQ bar. A contractor paralegal while living in the United States, the returning resident yo-yos handling legalese while enjoying her passion for the arts as a drama and dance educator at Reach Academy. We’re suitably taken with her easy-going demeanour and sit by the bar to chit chat.
What is your cocktail of choice?
I’m not a big drinker, but my usual go-to cocktail is a mojito. However, tonight I’m having a Prosecco.
How did you find the Take Style Out launch?
I thought it was very classy. I enjoyed the set-up inside the J Wray & Nephew bar space. The ambiance was fantastic.
You wear a number of professional hats as a contractor paralegal and drama and dance educator. How do you juggle the duality of teaching and handling legalese?
Drama and dancing have been a part of my life for over 30 years and as it’s my passion, it comes naturally for me. I’ve been in the legal field for over 17 years. My love for what I do allows them to just fall into place.
What do you most enjoy about your jobs?
I love being able to work with children and be a positive influence in their lives. I love helping people, so with law I’m able to make a difference and advise people who need guidance. I love solving problems.
What nudged you in the direction of becoming an educator in the arts?
I’ve been involved in the performing arts since I was six years old and have been dancing and singing ever since. Drama is a part of my personality. It’s who I am and what I enjoy. I’m truly grateful to be able to share my talents and help develop young talents here in Jamaica.
Where do you go to unwind?
I head to Rock Villas in Montego Bay to relax on the beach with my family.
What’s playing on your iPod or car stereo?
I’m listening to The Ultimate Best of Lionel Richie and Phil Collins’ Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2.
Jeans or an LBD?
I wear whatever is comfortable for the occasion, but I definitely prefer jeans as I’m a very relaxed dresser.
Flats or stilettos?
I’m actually comfortable in both stilettos and flats, but my preference would be flats. They are way more comfortable.
Who does your hair?
Yvonne Anderson from La Claire’s.
Who is your style icon?
I love Jennifer Lopez. She always looks good whether in sweats or dressed up.
Where are your must-shop destinations to indulge in retail therapy?
I shop mainly at Sabritru in downtown Kingston.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from my mother: to always stay humble in all my accomplishments in life and be grateful to God for the gifts and talents he has blessed me with.
Which five words best describe Danah?
Fun, loyal, energetic, giving and loving.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
My husband Roger. He’s as perfect as they get. He does everything as a husband that he needs to do, and we were close friends before we married. He’s a nurturer, a strong sounding board and loves me and our two boys with all the love he can.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
A perfect date for me is going out for dinner. I go for good food over ambiance. I enjoy peaceful things and quietude. So if not dinner, watching a movie is just as nice.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Wow… in 10 years, I see myself having my own performing arts company.
