Denbigh, Holmwood register convincing wins in netball
DEFENDING champions Denbigh High and Holmwood Technical began the second round of the 2014 ISSA/Digicel Rural High Schoolgirls Junior and Senior League competitions with convincing wins on Friday at The Queen’s Court and GC Foster College, respectively.
Junior League defending champions Denbigh easily brushed aside Marymount High 47-10, while Senior League defending champions Holmwood crushed Charlemont High 59-13 in a one-sided encounter.
According to Janice Hancel-Walker, coach of Denbigh, the team will be looking to continue on their winning ways.
“I think the team played after a few players are recovering from the Chikungunya Virus. We are really happy to start out the second round with such a resounding victory, and we hoped the girls can maintain their composure in the remaining matches,” Hancel-Walker said.
She said despite the big win, the other schools such as Yallahs High and Edwin Allen High “could be the ones likely to give us a close battle for Group Three honours, as we have not seen them in action”.
Denbigh also won their game against St Mary High 60-10 to start out strongly in the second round of the Senior League. They led 30-3 at half-time in the Seniors, while in the Juniors Denbigh led 23-6.
Meanwhile, Carlene Graham-Powell, coach of Holmwood Technical, said this is the second match her team has played since the start of the competition in September.
“It’s nice to start the second round with such a wide margin of victory as the girls have not been playing together,” Graham-Powell said.
Holmwood, who lost only one game in the Junior League to Bellefield High, were also successful by beating Dinthill High 33-22 in the Juniors after leading 15-13 at the half-time break.
In other results on Friday, Titchfield High beat Central 28-8; Yallahs defeated Edwin Allen High 32-12; Glenmuir outscored St Mary High 28-8 in Junior action.
In the Seniors, Titchfield High defeated Kellits High 63-12; Edwin Allen High beat St Thomas Technical 36-25; Glenmuir High outscored Oracabessa High 38-22.
