All Ja Junior Badminton Champs on this weekend
THE 2014 All Jamaica Junior Badminton Championships begins this weekend at Constant Spring Golf Club Rackets Complex with all of the nation’s young guns vying for the coveted title of being an All Jamaica Junior champion.
The event is sponsored by Sports Development Foundation.
Action starts today at 8:00 am and continues tomorrow. Finals for Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 will be played tomorrow evening and the finals for Under-17 and Under-19 events will start next Monday at 6:00 pm.
Play will be in five categories, and all the Caribbean champions should be on show, with such as Zane Reid; Samuel Ricketts; the Wilson brothers, Shane and Sean; Ester Reynolds; Katherine Wynter, and Shizelle McTyson.
Under-15 girls’ singles: Shizelle McTyson, who is the gold medallist from Caribbean Badminton Championships (CAREBACO), will face Tania Daley, who won the last event as McTyson withdrew due to an injury.
Under-15 boys’ singles: Joel Angus, who has shown tremendous improvement, has been seeded number one and is expected to overcome Rhys Reid, the number two seed. Angus won three titles at Caribbean Badminton Championships (CAREBACO).
Under-13 girls’ singles: Leigh-Ann Cross is number one player in this category and will face young and upcoming Rihanna Rust, who medalled in Under-11 at CAREBACO Championships in August and will be playing in a higher age group.
Under-13 boys’ singles: Zane Reid and Adam Taylor will fight for top honours at this tournament.
Under-17 boys’ singles: Joel Angus will be stepping up to face the bigger guns in the Under-17 where Shane Wilson is the overwhelming favourite.
Under-17 girls’ singles: Alaina Bailey and Tania Daley will compete for top honours in this category.
Under-19 girls’ singles: Katherine Wynter is the overwhelming favourite after she won two gold medals and one silver at CAREBACO in her events.
Under-19 boys’ singles: Samuel Ricketts, who is returning to action after an injury, may not be a sure bet against Sean Wilson. Both players will seek to win the top boys title in their final year as Juniors.
This is the Jamaica Badminton Association’s final junior tournament for the year. The 2014 All Jamaica Badminton Seniors and Masters Championship will be held in December.
