U20 Champs: Jamaica grab late goal to draw 2-2 with Trinidad

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A last gasp free kick by Junior Flemmings salvaged a point for Jamaica as they came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Trinidad and Tobago in their opening CONCACAF Under 20 Championship Group A encounter at the National Stadium Friday night.

With defeat on the cards, Flemmings calmly curled a freekick over the wall and into the back of the net in the 90+4 minute.

It was arguably one of the worse first half displays by a Jamaican team for ages as the Young Reggae Boyz lacked purpose and went into the break two goals down.

But whatever head-coach Theodore Whitmore said to them at the break, seemed to have worked as they came out firing on all cylinders and really made a fight of it in the second half to earn a valuable point.

Panama, who whipped Aruba 4-0, lead the group with three points. The USA and Guatemala are in a point each after playing to a 1-1 draw.

The home fans were stunned into silence very early as Aikim Andrews opened the scoring for T&T in the seventh minute with a long range effort that sailed over the head of the badly positioned goalkeeper Nicholas Nelson.

Then before the local fans digested what had hit them, US-based Kadeem Corbin doubled the advantage firing home from just inside the box in the 15th minute after poor defending by the Jamaicans.

The Derek King coached boys were all over Jamaica and could have been up by at least five goals in the first half.

But Whitmore rung the changes pulling Michael Seaton and Ismael Currie and bringing on Donjay Smith and Allando Brown at the start of the of the second half and switched left back Isamnia Cohen into midfield as they tried desperately to get back in the game, and that they did.

A quick free kick released Flemmings down the right flank and his cross was met by Smith who nodded home in the 67th minute.

The National Stadium was now alive as Jamaica took control of the game late on and pressed for the equaliser.

With the fourth official indicating four minutes of time added on, it looked bleak for Jamaica with time at a premium. .

But as he has been doing all season for his school, Flemmings stepped up to the plate and delivered a wonderful free kick to earn a valuable point for Jamaica.
