Athletes shine at rain-soaked Corporate Area Development Meet

Despite several top athletes not participating at the Digicel Anthrick Corporate Area Development Meet and the presence of rain, there were still some notable performances at the National Stadium yesterday.

With the Ben Francis Meet set for Saturday, plus the prestigious Gibson McCook Relays the Saturday after, several schools rested their top athletes for this midweek event.

Nevertheless, Calabar’s Warren Barrett shone brightly in capturing the Class One discus and shot put throwing double, so too did Edward Clarke, Shauna Helps and Kiara Grants in the sprints.

Barrett won the Class One discus in 49.58m, just ahead of KC ‘s Rajindra Campbell with 49.50m. Andre Garvey of Excelsior was third with 47.33m.

Barrett would return to win the shot put with 18.62m ahead of his teammate Caesar Kemp with 17.20m. Kyle Mitchell of Wolmer’s was third with 16.75m.

Clarke showed why Calabar will be a force in the 4x100m relay when they stopped the clock at 10.45 seconds in establishing a new record. Clarke looked much improved in taking the event ahead of Raheem Robinson of Wolmer’s in 10.62 seconds. KC’s Chadwayne Walker pulled up and failed to finish.

Davian Baker of KC won the boys’ 400m hurdles open in 52.66 seconds ahead of Calabar ‘s Norman Pittersgill, who won heat one in 53.21 ahead of Orlando Smith of KC with 53.71 seconds.

Shana Wright of Wolmer’s Girls’ was quickest in the girls 400m open in 1:06.81 minutes ahead of her teammate Shantae McDonald in 1:06.91 minutes. Abby-Gay Buckham of Convent of Mercy Alpha was third with 1:09.00 minutes.

Coya Christy of Wolmer’s won the Class Two discus with 34.44m ahead of Gabrielle Bailey of St Andrew High with 33.84m. Immaculate ‘s Kadian Clarke was third with 32.56m.

Andrienne Adams of Holy Childhood captured the girls’ Class Three discus with 29.26m ahead of Kimberly Lugg of Excelsior, who was second with 26.20m.

In the Class Two discus, Coby-Malcolm Mitchell of JC won the event with 40.37m ahead of Calabar’s Andre Chin with 40.05. KC’s Dohnarro Stewart was third with 39.20m.

Travis Riley of Calabar leapt 7.23m to win the Class One long jump ahead of Jordan Scott of Campion College with 7.07m. St George’s College’s Lorenzo Cooper was third with 6.76m.

Excelsior High dominated the girls Class One shot put as Latifah Smith (11.55m) and Nayoka Clunis (11.42m) grabbed the top-two spots. St Hugh’s Aliyah Francis was third with 9.97m.

Danielle Griffiths of Alpha took the Class Three high jump with 1.60m, the same height as second- and third-placed Ramona Hilton of Camperdown High and Shannon Bailey of Wolmer’s.

In Class Two, Alpha’s Gabriel Foster took the event with 1.70m ahead of Lorean Murray of St Andrew High with 1.65m, the same as third- placed teammate Stephanie Myrie.

Safia Morgan of Immaculate won the Class One equivalent, clearing 1.70m comfortably ahead of Rushawn Spencer of Wolmer’s with 1.55m.
