NOT since 2012 have Jamaicans taken to the sky quite like this — on the wings of paper.

Jamaicans will have their chance to be among the world’s best as the Red Bull Paper Wings competition returns to Jamaica.

The international paper plane competition takes a favourite childhood pastime and upgrades it for a more mature audience. The challenge is to make a plain sheet of paper fly as far, as long, or as artistically through the air as possible.

More than 37,000 competed across 83 countries worldwide, and four years later that number is set to rise. The Jamaican competition will be held on April 9, 2015 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, UTech and the local winner will fly to Salzburg, Austria to compete in the international finals at Hangar-7 on May 9.

Registration for the local competition is open via the Red Bull Paper Wings website. All a contestant has to do is visit the site, select his or her country and fill out the information required. There is no registration deadline. However, there is a limited number of spaces for participants, so the sooner the better for those looking to make their mark in the sky.

The competition is done according to international standards established by the Paper Aircraft Association and the Guinness World Records Regulations, ensuring a level playing field across the board.

Aimed at students, internationally the competition has three aspects to it — longest distance, longest airtime and aerobatics — and must be held indoor with no wind interference.

However, in Jamaica, participants will only be allowed to compete in the longest distance category, the winner earning for themselves the chance to represent Jamaica in Salzburg, Austria.

For the longest distance category, planes must be built on location using provided official paper and launched from a predetermined start point. Each participant is allowed two tries — different planes can be used — and the better flight is the one that goes towards the final score. Registration takes place at redbullpaperwings.com.
