Two in a row
Edwin Allen will be in the unique position of having two relatively underestimated teams — in St Jago and Hydel — pushing them for the girl’s title. However, the Michael Dyke-coached team don’t doubt themselves, and it would be unwise for anyone else to.
The girls from Frankfield won at ‘Champs’ last year with 337 points to St Jago’s 263. At Central Champs earlier this year, the sky blues crushed their rivals, scoring 457 points ahead of Holmwood Technical with 335.5, Vere Technical 334, Hydel 222 and Manchester High 140.5.
Star girl Saqukine Cameron, in her final year, will be hoping to overcome stiff competition in the Class One sprints. She was also part of the record-breaking mile relay team last year and this year will likely be anchoring an outfit with Davia Smith, Janiel Moore and Patrice Moody.
Another Cameron, this time Kasheika, leads their Class Two sprinting outfit, though they will likely cede Class Three to the likes of Jago and Hydel.
Class Four, however, has strength for the Clarendonians, embodied by Shanique Rowe and Kevona Davis.
Janell Fullerton and Rochell Frazer lead a one-two punch in the Class One throws, with Hydel looking to the most likely to upset a traditionally strong area for Edwin Allen. In the long jump, 6.02 woman Danique Bryan will be aiming to fly the sky blue flag high.
If any of the other competitions over the season are any indication, Edwin Allen should be good for a second consecutive title and third in three years. However, the margin of victory may not be as big as it was last year.
