Edwin Allen win by a city block

Clarendon school repeats Girls’ Champs victory

Edwin Allen High cruised to a third title, retaining their girls’ crown at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, which ended at the National Stadium in a blaze of glory last night.

In front of another massive crowd of well over 30,000 cheering spectators, the Michael Dyke-coached team built on what was a smaller-than-expected lead coming into the day to run away with the title.

Edwin Allen led Hydel High by a mere 18.5 points after 20 finals on Friday night, 131.5 to 113, with St Jago High on 86.33, and former champions Holmwood Technical on 75.

There were mild concerns midway the afternoon when Hydel moved to the front briefly, but the Edwin Allen machine righted itself and powered home.

They amassed 321 points, 100 more than second-placed Hydel’s 221, with St Jago in third place on 219.33, Holmwood Technical in fourth place on 206, and Vere Technical rounding out the top five with 136 points.

Four records were established yesterday in the Class Four 200m by Joanne Reid, the Class One shot put, the Class Two 4x100m, and the Class Four 4x100m.

All four 100m champions from Friday night returned to double up in the 200m yesterday, three from St Jago and Edwin Allen’s Shellece Clarke in Class Two.

St Jago’s long-legged Joanne Reid smashed the Class Four record, running 24.21 seconds (-1.3m/s) to erase the 24.28 seconds mark set by Kimone Shaw two years ago.

Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis was second in 24.23 seconds, and also under the old time, while St Catherine High’s Shakeira Bowra was third in 25.23 seconds.

St Jago’s Nataliah Whyte romped home in the Class One race in 23.56 seconds (-1.0m/s), beating Edwin Allen’s Saqukine Cameron (23.82 seconds), who won a second silver after being second last year, and Holmwood Technical’s Sashalee Forbes (23.92 seconds).

Clarke ran 24.12 seconds (-2.4m/s) to win her second gold medal in 24 hours followed by the Hydel pair of Yanique Dayle (24.15 seconds) and Taqece Duggan (24.48 seconds).

Kimone Shaw of St Jago won the Class Three event in 24.60 seconds (-3.6m/s) as Anna-Kay Allen of St Catherine High took silver in 24.90 seconds, and Hydel’s Ashanti Moore was third in 25.07 seconds.

Holmwood Technical’s Lisa Buchanan won three gold medals, adding the 800m and 3,000m yesterday after earlier winning the 1,500m on Friday to complete a gruelling week.

She led all the way in the 3,000m before running away from the field to win in 10 minutes 17.04 seconds ahead of Britnie Dixon of Vere Technical in 10.22.26 minutes, and Monifah Green of Hydel High in 10:27.87 minutes.

Edwin Allen High won two of the four 4x100m relays, both in new records, while St Jago took the other two. They won Class Two in 44.88 seconds, beating the old record of 45.04 seconds set in 2006. Hydel were second in 45.37 seconds, and Green Island third in 46.37 seconds.

The Class Four team broke the record for the second time this week, running 46.65 seconds, lowering the 46.90 seconds they had run in the preliminaries on Wednesday.

Wolmer’s Girls were second in 48.79 seconds and St Jago High third in 49.91 seconds.

St Jago won Class One in 44.39 seconds, followed by Holmwood Technical in 45.29 seconds and Wolmer’s Girls in 45.68 seconds.

A brilliant run from Kimone Shaw on the anchor leg led the St Jago Class Three team to the victory, coming from behind to clock 46.09 seconds. Hydel were second in 46.17 seconds, and Vere Technical third in 46.87 seconds.

St Jago won the 4x400m relay in 3 minutes 35.78 seconds, beating Vere Technical in 3:36.61 minutes, and St Elizabeth Technical in 3:35.78 minutes.

Edwin Allen retained the sprint medley relay title, running 4 minutes 01.40 seconds, beating Holmwood Technical (4:04.46 minutes) and St Jago High (4:07.70 minutes).

Earlier in the day, Dawnalee Loney of Camperdown High produced a well-timed run to catch the fast-starting Tiffany James of Papine High to win the Class One 400m in 52.78 seconds.

Loney caught James on the final curve and powered past her to win to make up for her silver medal last year while competing for Balaclava High.

James took the silver in 53.59 seconds just ahead of the fast-finishing Ashley Williams of Holmwood in 53.74 seconds.

Hydel High’s Taqece Duggan led from the start to win the Class Two 400m, powering home to win in 55.46 seconds, ahead of STETHS’ Satanya Wright in 56.06 seconds, and Edwin Allen’s Janiel Moore was third in 56.37 seconds.

In the Class Three final, Vere Technical’s Sanique Walker went out hard and led with about 70 metres to go before St Catherine High’s Anna-Kay Allen reeled her in to win in 54.46 seconds.

Walker took the silver medal in 53.59 seconds, with Janiel Josephs of St Andrew High third in 55.82 seconds.

After breaking the record in the semi-finals on Friday, running 13.56 seconds, St Jago High’s Peta-gay Williams retained her Class One 100m hurdles title with 13.88 seconds (-4.2m/s). Edwin Allen’s Telecia Brisco was well behind in second place with 14.24 seconds, and Immaculate Conception’s Jeanine Williams took third with 14.69 seconds.

Wolmer’s Girls’ Janeek Brown, as expected, ran away with the Class Two 100m event, running 13.80 seconds (-4.3m/s) to retain her title.

Glengoffe High’s Trishauna Hemmings took silver in 14.04 seconds, with Brown’s teammate Chris-Ann Bryan taking bronze in 14.35 seconds.

Holmwood Technical’s Shanette Allison won the Class Three 80m hurdles in 11.29 seconds (-3.1m/s). Hydel’s Joda Campbell was second in 11.52 seconds, and Manchester High’s Caszay Freeman third in 11.59 seconds.

In the Class Four 70m hurdles final, Convent of Mercy’s Breann Brown won the gold in a close race, running 10.70 seconds (-2.8m/s), edging St Jago’s Crystal Morrison in 10.71 seconds, and Edwin Allen’s Lisandra Brown in 10.76 seconds.

Holmwood Techncial’s Lisa Buchanan ran away with the Class One 800m title, clocking 2 minutes 14.44 seconds, beating STETHS’ Chantai Smith in 2:14.84 minutes, and St Andrew Technical’s Cameka Whitter in 2:15.32 minutes.

Junell Bromfield of STETHS retained her Class Two title with a commanding performance, clocking an impressive 2 minutes 08.65 seconds, well ahead of Holmwood’s Chrissani May in 2:11.62 minutes, and Vere Technical’s Britni Dixon in 2:11.89 minutes.

Edwin Allen’s Cemore Donald won Class Three with 2 minutes 11.62 seconds ahead of Sanique Walker in 2:12.72 minutes, and Manchester High’s Britney Brown in 2:13.38 minutes.

Edwin Allen’s Annia Ashley added the Class Three long jump to her high jump gold medal after jumping a wind-aided 5.84m (3.7m/s) yesterday.

Camperdown’s Monief Heslop took second with 5.76m (1.0m/s) and Britany Anderson of Vere Technical was third with 5.70m (3.6m/s).
