Storm Saulter’s semester visit to the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies — as both filmmaker-in-residence, and guest lecturer of the Creative Writing for Screen course in the University’s Department of Literatures in English — cumulinated in a Neville Hall Lecture Theatre-venued public talk, conducted by the auteur and cinematographer, two Friday evenings ago. The lecture titled ‘Towards a New Caribbean Cinema’ attracted a cadre of industry hotshots, academics, creative types and cinephiles eager to indulge in Saulter’s world and engage with the promising second coming of West Indian cinema. The visual artist peppered his presentation with an introductory showreel, and emphatic clips from his flicks Watching Him Kissing Her, one of the shorts from the Saulter-executive-produced Ring Di Alarm anthology, and his household name-making debut film Better Mus’ Come. The Saturday Social eye pans across the well-subscribed amphitheatre.
