Dover action to heat up
THE Jamaica Race Drivers Club hopes to inject some more excitement into the top tier’s of circuit racing at Dover Raceway in St Ann. With that in mind, Auto has learnt that Peter ‘Bull’ Thompson will return to the sport later this year.
“I do plan to return to circuit racing in 2015. Maybe the next race meet or further down depending on what our upcoming testing sessions show us,” said Thompson.
Thompson — considered one of the top four draws in the genre along with David Summerbell Jr, Douglas Gore, and Peter Rae — has not seen action in his Mazda RX-7 in over two years.
In a business driven by rivalries, there is currently no one to match Summerbell, as Gore’s Audi TT-R DTM suffered significant damage in February and will sit out the 2015 season due to repairs. The pairing of Thompson and his May Pen Ice-sponsored Mazda RX-7 are seen as a credible challengers to Summerbell’s supremacy.
Meanwhile, Easter Monday’s Carnival of Speed was a packed affair, with several major accidents punctuating the day.
“The meet went as we planned for, but we didn’t expect so many accidents,” Chen said.
He chalked it up to the rules, which has made the racing close and competitive. The first incident was a massive one as Sebastien Rae found himself rolling multiple times after contact with a retaining wall trying to avoid a collision ahead of him. The car was badly damaged bringing the meet to a halt as he was whisked away to the hospital. The carnage continued with the next biggest incident taking out multiple cars including Total Summerbell Racing’s Andre Anderson. Montegonian Ameer Johnson also flipped his car.
At the top of the points, due to last year’s rule change, there is a three-way tie between Dean Corrodus, Fraser McConnell and Kyle Gregg for meet champion. The men dominated their respective classes with Corrodus for Bracket 29, McConnell for Bracket 35, and Gregg for Modified Production 2.
Nigel Wilmot took his off-roading Suzuki Samurai to the track and conquered Bracket 45T. Newcomer Chris-John Addision garnering Bracket 39 points. Guy Fraser returned to circuit racing in a Honda CRX to win Improved Production. Modified Production 1 went to Kishore Williams. Even with his wreck Andre Anderson kept a lock on Modified Production 3.
Andre Rickards won Motorcycle B with Kyle Reynolds winning Motorcycle A.
“We are already planning the May 25th meet,” Chen added.
