Arson suspected in JUTC bus fire
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A police investigation has been launched into Wednesday’s fire which destroyed a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus in Cooreville Gardens, St Andrew.
The company said in a release yesterday that initial checks have led engineers to suspect arson, as the fire was not caused by any defect on the bus.
JUTC stated that the investigation by its Engineering and Technical Services Department revealed that the fire started above the engine bay of the bus, engulfing the entire unit.
Engineers regard this as a clear indication that the fire was started inside the bus and did not develop as a consequence of any failure in any of the systems of the bus, the release noted.
Four JUTC buses have been destroyed by fire since 2013.
