Holness saddened as Mair quits politics
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Andrew Holness has expressed sadness at the decision of North East St Catherine MP Gregory Mair to quit representational politics.
“… While I respect and understand Gregory’s decision I am sad that Gregory would not continue in representational politics. He was a dedicated servant of the people and a diligent Parliamentarian,” Holness said in a JLP release on Friday.
Added the release: “Mr Mair served the people of North East St Catherine for eight years, was a minister of State in the Ministry of Education in the last JLP administration and also served as deputy treasurer of the Jamaica Labour Party.
“We take this opportunity to thank Gregory for his years of faithful service to the people of Jamaica and the institution of the Jamaica Labour Party. Team JLP looks forward to working with Gregory in other capacities to advance Jamaica’s prosperity agenda.”
In his letter of resignation to the JLP leadership, Mair explained that his decision is based on family and business reasons. But JLP sources said that he left out of frustration over the party’s failure to address Sharon Hay-Webster’s interest in running for his seat.
He will serve out his current term as MP.
