Commanding Chief will be tested by star-studded field
The Eight Thirty Sprint race and the Allan E ‘Billy’ Williams Memorial Trophy call are the two trophy races on the 11-race card at Caymanas Park today.
However, the three-year-old and upward Open Allowance penultimate call, going 1,600 metres, for a purse of $845,000, at approximately 4:45 pm, will highlight the card.
The annual running of the Eight Thirty Sprint is a maiden special-weight contest for the native-bred three-year-old fillies in two divisions going 1,000 metres straight for purses of $768,000 each. Eleven will contest Division One and 12 Division Two.
Division One is the third race on the card and will go to post at approximately 1:00 pm with Division Two being run two races later at 2: 00 pm.
Meanwhile, the Allan E ‘Billy’ Williams Memorial Trophy, a three-year-olds and upward Overnight Allowance call, has attracted a locked and loaded field of 12 going 1,400 metres for a purse of $780,000 at approximately 3:00 pm.
The penultimate Open Allowance main event has attracted a nice field of tested and proven runners in the line-up and with the distance to the liking of most. Additionally, with the good racing form of many of the competitors, any among them is likely to be a winner.
On class on his day, the Spencer Chung-conditioned Commanding Chief would have ripped through this bunch much as a wildfire would. However, since changing stables he has not recaptured best form and could be here to shift some attention away fromCampesino who now seems ripe to take the Open Allowance event after being surprisingly beaten by Poker Star on last.
Campesino has no recent history of success at the distance, but the event being an extended sprint and coming from the stables of Philip Feanny, should be in with a shot among these with the type of performance he gave on last.
And now down some 5.0kg for the apprentice Bebeto Harvey, it is expected that Campesino, the speedy son of Compadre, should now be at a weight that he could make amends for his recent defeat by Poker Star over the shorter distance.
But while Campesino may have received a substantial pull in weights, it does not make the task any easier with Hover Craft, the stablemate of Poker Star, present. Not given much chance against his stablemate on last, Hover Craft, who is no mean sprinter, came from way back and finished like a loose cannon behind Campesino some 10 lengths adrift when they last met a week ago. And now going 200 metres farther, could just get there in time on this occasion with Commanding Chief showing little by way of winning form.
And even with Dane Nelson up, Commanding Chief may still have to struggle, but is the proven class in the field and cannot be altogether dismissed.
Therefore, while Campesino and Hover Craft are expected to have a forthright presence in the outcome in the event, it is expected that recent winner All Correct, the stablemate of Hover Craft, will be among the challengers for parity with Linton Steadman in the saddle.
Be that as it may, the main danger to the aforementioned pretenders will be the Harry Parsard-owned and trained Long Running Train. An imported four-year-old bay filly by Flower Alley, Long Running Train has had two failed attempts over the distance. But with no Franfield or Seeking Your Dream present and coming in at 50.0kg for lightweight jockey Wesley Henry, the promising American import has a real chance of her first Open Allowance race on local soil.
