Blakkman puts in work
This is the final in a six-part series looking at artistes who had breakthrough songs in 2015. Do they have what it takes to follow up?
LAST year, deejay Blakkman’s fledgling career got a much needed boost with the single Miss You So Much.
Released on the Frenz For Real Production imprint in May, the track features in-demand sing-jay Dexta Daps.
“It get the most play of all mi song dem,” Blakkman told Jamaica Observer.
He said that song came about by chance.
“Dexta a mi friend, and mi and him live inna di same community (Seaview Gardens). Dexta ask mi fi forward wid him a the studio. When we reach him start listen a riddim and then sing the chorus. Dexta then say: ‘Build your part’ and mi just do it.”
Blakkman said he’s determined to build on the foundation Miss You So Much has set.
“Well, I’m in the studio putting in the work. I have a couple of songs to be released. People will like my type of songs… mi have the right metaphors and simile…The right package,” said the 33-year-old.
Hailing from Clarendon, Blakkman (given name Oral White) relocated to Seaview Gardens in Kingston after a stint at Edwin Allen High in Clarendon.
“Mi love music from mi school days… always a musician, born wid music foot and music hand,” he said.
Despite recording since 2004, Blakkman gained some traction in 2014 with Nine Night. His other singles includeHealing and Real Friend.
