Dancing Queen and Poison Gas produced contrasting performances to win both sections of the $768,000 Eight Thirty Sprint feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.

The maiden special weight event for native-bred three-year-old fillies was contested over the five-furlong straight course.

After being slowly into stride at the off, Dancing Queen, under a well-timed ride from veteran jockey Ian ‘Dolly Baby’ Spence, came with a strong run in the last 100 metres to beat long-time leader Zandrina (Andre Martin up) by a neck to take Division One.

The well-bred Pinelope (Shane Ellis astride), who was prominent throughout the race, finished well for third place and Vera Cruz, under visiting Chavion Chow, completed the frame in the 10-horse field after Photogenic (Hakeem Pottinger astride) was scratched at the gates by veterinarians on duty.

Bred and owned by Ham Stables Limited and trained by Philip Feanny, Dancing Queen (Sorrentino – Honeymoon Bay) covered the distance in 1:00.2 minutes behind splits 23.0 and 46.1 seconds.

In Division Two, Poison Gas, trained by Phillip Elliott and ridden by Omar Walker, made all convincingly to win by five lengths over Authentic (Chavion Chow aboard), Zephyr (Kuri Powell up) and Dutchess Uriel, the mount of Robert Halledeen.

Posion Gas (Nuclear Wayne – Princess Lulu) stopped the clock in an encouraging 59 seconds after setting cracking splits of 22:3 and 45:3 seconds.

Meanwhile, after a superb stretch run, the Gary Subratie-trained American-bred Brawn got up in the nick of time to beatShining Light (Mellisa Ward up) by three-quarters of a length in the $780,000 Allan E ‘Billy’ Williams Memorial Trophy co-feature over 1,400 metres.

The winning time was 1:26.1 minutes.
