Granville FC eye semi-final berth in Western Confed Super League
GRANVILLE, St James — Mid-season champions Granville FC could become the first semi-finalists in the Jamaica Football Federation’s Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League with a victory over Reggae Youths in their third-round game at Granville on Saturday, set to start at 3:00pm.
After beating Beaches Negril 3-1 on Tuesday, their 11th consecutive game without a loss – including the mid-season final – the two -time champions improved to 28 points and increased their lead atop the points tables to seven over second-placed Wadadah FC.
Wadadah FC and third-placed Montego Bay Boys Club will meet in a St James derby at Jarrett Park, also on Sunday, where the winner will take over second place.
On Tuesday, Oneil Pringle, Davion Thelwell and Andrew Allen scored for Granville FC as they won their ninth league game as Beaches Negril stayed on 13 points, tied with Reggae Youths, and just above the relegation zone.
Reggae Youths, who have a game in hand against Petersfield FC, are desperate for a string of good results if they are to avoid the drop after their first season in the Super League, and will hope for an upset win over Granville FC Saturday.
Reggae Youths got off to a good start and were unbeaten through their first six games, but then lost the next three to drop in the points tables.
They are coming off a 3-0 win over Village United, but will face arguably the strongest team in the competition, giving up just two goals all season long.
Meanwhile, the Wadadah FC vs Montego Bay Boys Club game is also expected to be competitive between two teams seeking to close the gap on Granville FC, and book an early place in the semi-finals.
On Sunday, Boys Club dropped two valuable points as they gave up a 2-0 first-half lead and were held to a 2-2 draw by Clark’s Town, and will face a Wadadah FC team that appears to be peaking at the right time.
Wadadah FC edged Lucea FC 1-0 on Sunday, and a win on Saturday would see them move clear in second place.
Meanwhile, there will be three more games on Sunday. Clark’s Town will hope to snap a four-game winless run when they host a wilting Salt Marsh United at Cedric Titus High.
Clark’s Town have not lost a game at home all season and will start favourites against Salt Marsh United who have won just once in their last seven outings.
Petersfield FC will hope to kick-start their semi-final bid when they go to Sandals Whitehouse, while Village United and Lucea FC will meet in a match-up of two teams facing relegation, at Elleston Wakeland Centre in Falmouth.
