Dwayne Star continued to show vast improvement when he scored a convincing win at the Overnight Allowance level at Caymanas Park last Saturday.

The four-year-old bay gelding by Storm Craft – Akioda by Liver Stand didn’t quite get it right on his first attempt at the same level after he failed by a head to catch Shining Light in the recent Easter Sprint Cup over 1,100 metres.

On Saturday, however, the Patrick Lynch-trained Dwayne Star made no mistake as he romped home by three-and-a-half lengths over 1,000 metres straight– his pet trip – with Dane Nelson providing guidance from the saddle.

Kibbeisha Little, assistant trainer to Lynch, said the stable’s charge got the right trip and the right rider on this occasion.

“Dane (Nelson) knows this horse well.

He knows how to ride him and knows how to get the best out of him.

Dwayne Star just loves the five straight, and with him being more effective over the distance and with Nelson in the saddle, we were very confident of victory,” Little told the Complete Racing Guide.

Sent off as the 3-5 favourite in a small field of eight runners, Dwayne Star raced prominently in fourth place behind Action Man (Aaron Chatrie), Dreamcometrue (Odean Edwards) and Meritone, the mount of Jerome Innis.

When asked to run by Nelson passing the dummy rails, Dwayne Star powered away to win in a quick 0:58:2 seconds.

Action Man held on for second spot ahead of Dreamcometrue and Meritone.

“It was really an easy race for us in the end. I knew he loved the 1,000 metres straight and so I just let him run his own race.

We got a good break and I didn’t rush him, but held him behind the speed and asked him to run the last two furlongs and he came home,” Nelson said.

“He is a very nice and talented horse who is going places. I believe he will develop nicely and be competitive when he reaches the higher class,” Nelson noted.
