Spotlight on Claudja Barry
TONIGHT the Douglas Orane Auditorium at the Wolmer’s Boys’ School in Kingston will become a hotspot, as the popular annual fund-raiser, Powerful Women and Men Perform for Charity takes centre stage.
One act who can’t wait to put on a show is Jamaican-born singer Claudja Barry, whose list of credits includes a stint with the group Boney M.
“I met Michelle Wilson-Reynolds some time ago and she told me about this event. I was immediately impressed and immediately agreed to be part of it. I think it is a great cause. Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously and an event like this just showcases our other side… that lighter, funnier side that persons don’t expect to see in public. So I’ll be doing a little modelling and singing. I want people to come away from the event and my performance with a sense of enjoyment and an understanding that this is being done for charity,” she told Jamaica Observer.
Formed in 1976, the vocal quartet, Boney M, was created by German record producer Frank Farian. The group achieved popularity during the disco era of the late 1970s. Originally based in Germany, the four original members of the group’s official line-up were Jamaican-born singers Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell from Aruba. In the 1980s various line-ups of the band have performed with different personnel. They are known for hits including Ma Baker, Belfast, and Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring.
Meanwhile, Barry disclosed that she is still working and continues to perform all around the world at this time. She is currently enjoying success with a track titled Mighty Real.
