World Champion Freestyler Sean Garnier shows off his stuff
A top-class exhibition by 2008 World Champion Freestyler Sean Garnier signalled the launch of the third instalment of the Jamaican leg of the Red Bull Street Style competition scheduled for June 25–August 5.
Garnier, who only hours earlier arrived in the island from France, graced those in attendance at the launch on Thursday evening with an entertaining and energetic performance at the Fiction Two Club in Kingston.
Despite a lengthy delay to the start of proceedings which had guests slightly restless, the presence of Garnier and a few cans of the premium energy drink, lifted spirits inside the venue, as the talented freestyler showcased his smooth skills, before facing off with past local champion Aquel Fonseca.
A few aspiring freestylers also grasped the opportunity to battle the famous Frenchman, which laid the platform for what is to come in the six-week competition, which will provide an opportunity for freestylers of all ages to showcase their skills.
Red Bull will conduct an islandwide talent search for the best freestyle footballer to represent Jamaica in the Red Bull Street Style finals overseas later this year. The qualifiers of the competition will flick off at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) on June 25, and will also host participants from Clarendon, Mandeville and Westmoreland.
The competition tour will then make its way to Ocho Rios on July 2 and then Kingston a week later on July 9. The final leg of the qualifiers will culminate in the western end of the island in Montego Bay on July 16.
The grand finale is scheduled for August 5 at a venue to be announced.
The most talented individual will walk away with the prestigious title of Jamaica’s Red Bull Street Style champion and the opportunity to represent the island at the World Championship showdown to be staged in London in September.
The international segment of the high octane competition will see freestylers from approximately 50 countries converging at one location to battle for the symbol of freestyle supremacy. Each battle will see two players facing-off for three minutes, with the winner advancing and the loser taking the dreaded trip back home.
