Stolen money hidden by accused goes missing
THERE was laughter in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court Tuesday after it was reported that a man, who allegedly broke into his workplace and stole $1.2 million, later told the police that he only took $700,000 and that he bought a TV then hid the rest, which was later stolen.
The accused, Lennard Duhaney, 39, of Spanish Town in St Catherine, who was employed to Cala Telecommunication Company on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston, is also accused of stealing a splicer valued at US$10,000 during the alleged break-in.
When Duhaney appeared in court he pleaded not guilty to shop breaking and larceny and was granted bail in the sum of $650,000 by parish judge Simone Maddix.
Bail was granted on condition that he reports to the Spanish Town Police Station on Saturdays and surrenders his travel documents. A stop order was also placed on him at all ports.
Duhaney was arrested and charged following allegations that he broke into the company and stole $1.2 million and a splicer which were left in a desk drawer.
When he was cautioned by the police, it is alleged that he said, “ Mi buy the TV out a the money me tek from Cala and is $700,000 me tek but me hide the rest and when me go back me caan find it.”
Attorney Gloria Blenham Declue, who sought bail for the accused, told the judge that Duhaney had never gotten in trouble with the law before now and had no previous conviction.
The judge then asked: “ Does your instruction extend to the caution statement?”.
Blenham Declue: “ No, Your Honour.”
Duhaney was subsequently offered bail and a trial date was scheduled for September 1.
