Ja U-17s pound USVI to seal group honours

Jamaica….9 Briscoe (15th, 40th), Letts (78th, 84th), Atkinson (29th), Verley (32nd), Osei (35th), Parris (76th), Thompson (83rd) US Virgin Islands….0

ST THOMAS, US Virgin Islands — Jamaica’s Under-17 Reggae Boyz were brutish in their farewell from these isles when they crushed hosts the US Virgin Islands 9-0 in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Group Four World Cup qualifying game at the Lionel Roberts Stadium yesterday.

Thriston Briscoe (15th and 40th minutes) and substitute Chad Letts (78th, 84th) led the scoring with two goals each. Other scorers for Jamaica were Cobi Atkinson (29th), Jeremy Verley (32nd), Damani Osei (35th), Kaheem Parris (76th), Omar Thomspon (83rd).

With maximum nine points and group honours to boast of, the Boyz have booked their spot to the CFU finals, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in September.

In their previous matches here, Jamaica had defeated Guyana 4-1 on Friday, and Antigua 3-1 on Sunday.

In the curtain-raiser yesterday, Antigua and Barbuda whipped Guyana 3-0 to finish second in the group, but will have to await the final outcome of the other five groups. From this first round of qualification, only the six group winners are guaranteed to advance to the decisive play-offs and the best overall second-placed team.

Jamaica coach Andrew Edwards said he was delighted with the discipline of the players and the flood of goals.

“Today’s (yesterday) was the easiest of the three games we played so far, but seven players scoring was fantastic and that will do a lot for their confidence and it also encourages good competition in the team… and I am very happy for the players who scored and there were a lot of good goals too,” he said.

The Boyz kept their promise of a bloodletting and it started in the 15th minute when Briscoe got his first by steering the ball home from a low left-sided cross by Atkinson.

Jamaica continued to threaten their opponents’ goal, but they were denied by decisive goalkeeping by USVI’s Alexander Katsoufis or faulting shooting of their own.

But in an 11-minute blitz, the Jamaicans opened up their cannons without mercy.

In the 29th minute, Atkinson stabbed home from Romario McPherson’s cross. Three minutes later captain Verley made it 3-0 with a super goal, starting the move by lifting the ball over a defender’s head before firing to the far post from 20 yards.

And before the celebrating pocket of Jamaican fans could settle back in their seat, defender Osei rammed home low with his favourite left foot in the 34th minute.

With their tails in the air, the Young Boyz continued the mauling when Briscoe got his second in the 49th minute after tidying up where Thompson had failed to deliver.

Following a lull in the bombardment after the half-time break, the visiting team kept up their butchery in the 76th minute when the skilful Parris waltzed into the penalty area and lashed home with his weaker right foot to make it 6-0, the mark by which a football game’s one-sided nature is usually measured.

And there was more to come.

Two minutes later, substitute Letts got the first of his double, and that effort was followed by Thompson in the 83rd minute, when he made wriggle room for himself to blast home from the edge of the area.

A minute later, Letts was well-positioned to lash in a textbook pull back by McPherson.

Two minutes from the end, the USVI supporters were on their feet urging Farrell Grant as he somehow found a clear run on the Jamaican goal, but his final shot was feeble and goalkeeper Daniel Russell was down quickly to smother the ball that trickled behind for a corner.
