Bigbrowngreyhope holds the cards in Ossie Steele Cup
The longstanding Oswald “Ossie” Steele Memorial Cup highlights a low-keyed weekend race card at Caymanas Park today.
Though the “Ossie” Steele is the designated feature race on the card, a cheapish Overnight Allowance call going 1,000 metres straight for a purse of $780,000 is the top race on the nine-race canter that has attracted a fair field of seven runners.
This does not suggest, by any stretch of the imagination, that the card is not competitive. Each race is imbued with runners who are the possessors of decent, recent good form to others who can take the opportunity to surprise.
The “Ossie” Steele has attracted a quite decent field of seven three-year-olds and upward runners who will compete on a $450,000 down to $400,000 claiming tag along with five-year-olds who are non-winners of four races.
The “Ossie Steele is the second race on the card going 1,200 metres, and is scheduled to get the programme off at a 1:15 pm, with first post at 12:40 pm.
Not much by way of serious opposition, the winner of the “Ossie” Steele, looks certain to come from one of either
Unbreakable, Shine or Bigbrowngreyhope.
Bigbrowngreyhope, the Ryan Darby-imported six-year-old gelded son of Big Brown, found the going on a $550,000 claiming column a little steep on last and quickly returns to the lower grade in search of a better result. But he can also find the column just as competitive, in the presence of the lightly weighted Shine, and the top-weighted Unbreakable (56.0kg) who can destroy this group of horses, without much ado, when fully sound.
Different Generation is another runner in the line-up who should run well in a field such as this. He is more adept at going straight. Nonetheless, he is also quite effective riding the bends, having recorded victories over 1,200 metres.
The Overnight Allowance call is another race of interest where seven runners will run going 1,000 metres straight at approximately 1:50 pm. This event should be fairly competitive with the talented but luckless Scoop Jordyne looking to have his easiest payday in months although he will have overcome the imported filly Blue Dixie, Lady Shankari and Gary Glitter to return to the winners’ enclosure once more.
Imported filly Blue Dixie has been to date disappointing but should be picking up the pieces from here on.
Action Man returns to action following a seven-day respite in good racing trim and although badly drawn at barrier one is fit and light enough to leave an impression on the final result.
