US convict attempts to flee to Jamaica
NEW CITY, NY (AP) — Authorities say a man who failed to appear for his sentencing on a criminally negligent homicide charge has been arrested at LaGuardia Airport.
Clifford Perkins was convicted in connection with a fatal motorcycle crash that killed Scott Phillips of West New York, New Jersey, on the Sprain Brook Parkway in May 2014.
Perkins failed to appear for his sentencing on August 3.
The Journal News says Westchester County police arrested him on Saturday. Authorities say Perkins planned to fly to Florida and then take a connecting flight to Jamaica.
He’s being held at the Westchester County Jail pending a court appearance on Monday.
Phillips was known professionally as DJ Father Shaheed of the New Jersey hip hop collective Poor Righteous Teachers. Shaheed was a producer of the group.
