Lacovia stun champs STETHS in rescheduled daCosta Cup fixture

LACOVIA, St Elizabeth — Lacovia High scored an upset 1-0 win over defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in their rescheduled Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football game played yesterday.

Devon Mullings’ deflected long-range effort was the difference between the teams in a game that was one of four rescheduled from Wednesday due to heavy rains in the region.

It was the first win for Lacovia High over their powerful neighbours since the first round of the 2008 season, snapping their three-game win streak. Since then they had managed only two draws — a 2-2 result last year and a 1-1 score in the opening game of the 2010 season.

The win saw Lacovia draw level with STETHS on nine points at the top of Zone E, while Munro College drew to within a point after their big 6-1 win over Black River High.

Oneeko Allen scored a hat-trick and Tevin Dunn got a double, while Tavin Shaw got the other goal for Munro College, who were scoring their second straight win.

Three schools, led by former champions Clarendon College, won their fourth-straight game.

Despite having a player sent off, Clarendon College held on to beat Thompson Town 1-0, to improve to 12 points in Zone H.

Glenmuir High rebounded from their first loss in the first round in three years to beat Denbigh High 1-0 with Tavares Wellington scoring the winner.

Lennon High moved past Thompson Town into second place after a 2-0 win over Edwin Allen High.

Mile Gully High kept pace with Manchester High in Zone F as they also won for their fourth-straight game, beating BB Coke High 2-0, and setting up a clash between unbeaten teams on Saturday.

Port Antonio stayed in cruise control in Zone L after beating Happy Grove 2-1.

Cedric Titus took over the lead in Zone C after edging Herbert Morrison Technical 1-0 in Montego Bay to go to 10 points, two more than Spot Valley, who have a game in hand.

Spot Valley were held 1-1 by William Knibb in Martha Brae, while Muschett High beat Holland High 2-1 at home.

In the competitive Zone D, Godfrey Stewart extended their lead after a 5-1 win over Maud McLeod as Alvares Cooper and Delroy Blake both scored two goals, while Ralden White got the other.

Petersfield slipped further down the points table after being held 1-1 by Little London, while Manning’s School beat Grange Hill 2-1.

Godfrey Stewart are on 12 points, four more than Little London, while Manning’s School joined Grange Hill on seven points, one more than Petersfield.

Four rescheduled games are to be played today. Kemps Hill are seeking to join leaders, the unbeaten Vere Technical, on 15 points at the top of Zone N.

They will face Tacius Golding High, who are on one point from their five games. They have conceded 19 goals to the one they have scored so far.

In Zone O, Robert Lightbourne High will hope to snap their two games losing skid when they host St Thomas Technical.

Robert Lightbourne started the season with two wins before losing their next two, but a win today would move them closer to the top two teams.
