Walker Cup semis rescheduled to today after rain wreaks havoc
Heavy and persistent rain, which caused a waterlogged playing surface, forced the postponement of yesterday’s ISSA/FLOW Walker Cup Knockout semi-final match between Jamaica College and Haile Selassie High at Constant Spring football field.
The early game of the double-header at the venue between Kingston College and Bridgeport High was abandoned at half-time with the former leading 1-0 through a 30th-minute penalty kick from talismanic marksman Rashawn Mackinson.
The organisers have rescheduled the Jamaica College/Haile Selassie clash for a 1:30 pm start today.
The final 45 minutes of the Kingston College/Bridgeport encounter is also slated to be completed today. The second-half kick-off is set for 12:30 pm.
Yesterday, Kingston College, one of the favourites to lift the KO title this year, had the better of the early exchanges against a Bridgeport side that sought to contain and then attack with speedy counters.
After creating a few good openings which were wasted, Kingston College finally got the breakthrough after a foul was committed inside the Bridgeport 18-yard box. Mackinson, who had already scored 20 goals overall this season, just about held his nerve to stroke home from the spot.
Even as grey skies opened to torrential afternoon showers, Bridgeport responded with threatening attacks, but were unable to find the equaliser before the break.
The resumption was delayed because of a saturated field, and eventually officials called off the encounter after assessment showed that the ball could not be rolled freely on the surface.
The second encounter was also called off after a later assessment as rain continued to pelt the venue.
