A well-fitting Tuxedo
After finishing second on debut earlier this month, Tuxedo found the perfect fit yesterday over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) to comfortably win the Supreme Ventures Super Challenge Trophy, a race restricted to two-year-old maidens yesterday at Caymanas Park.
With the hot, title-chasing apprentice Bebeto Harvey in the irons, Tuxedo was wisely held off the pace set after a furlong and a half by Don Chassis (Shane Ellis), before starting his move three furlongs out.
Don Chassis took the filed into the straight with Rambunctious Links (Omar Walker) on the outside looming large but just as Rambunctious Links took over, Harvey produced the now fully in stride Tuxedo on the outside and the chestnut colt by Traditional – Formal Jackie simply ran away from rivals.
In the end Tuxedo, trained by Richard Azan, won by three lengths with Rambunctious Links second and Don Chassis third. Tuxedo’s finishing time was a fast 1:20.3 minutes built on splits of 24.0 x 1:13.0 and 1:130.0.
Tuxedo is jointly owned by Richard and Milade Azan. Buoyed by the exciting performance of Tuxedo, trainer Azan said the win was an indication of what is to come from Tuxedo in his three-year-old season.
“It was a good performance and he did what he had to do win and I am happy. He is one of the few horses that takes off his father, Traditional and I have had some good ones from Traditional over the years; hopefully Tuxedo will be another.
“I am now looking forward to the threeyear- old season next year where I believe he will do great. Joint owner Milade Azan was even more pleased with the win by Tuxedo.
“It was an excellent performance. We all knew that he was looking for a distance of ground and 1,300 metres was just as good.
“I am so happy right now with the win and I am looking forward to more good performances from Tuxedo,” She said. The win on-board Tuxedo kept the flames of winning the jockeys’ championship still burning for Harvey.
“He (Tuxedo) ran a good race to win and I am happy with the outcome. “When I asked him to run at the top of the lane, he just responded and went on his way.
“He still had more in him which I think is quite significant especially when asked to go the longer distances later in his racing career,” Harvey said.
