Rain forces postponement of Walker Cup semi-finals
KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Walker Cup semi-final games have been postponed due to persistent rain, with Excelsior High leading Kingston College 1-0 in the curtain-raiser when it was called off in the 65th minute at the Stadium East field on Friday.
Aldrano Walters gave Excelsior the lead on the stroke of half-time, bundling home from a corner kick in the 45+2 minute.
But the field became impossible to play on, and referee Romarro Francis halted proceedings with 35 minutes remaining in normal time.
The game will resume on Saturday from the 65th minute at 2:00 pm.
Meanwhile, the second encounter between Mona High and Jamaica College was also postponed and will be played on Saturday, scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.
The curtain-raiser kicked off on a wet pitch, which turned what was supposed to be a classic encounter of tactics into a soggy slugfest as both teams fought for supremacy.
Despite having the lesser percentage of possession, Kingston College were more dominant and had the better of the half-chances throughout.
But Excelsior, as they have proved before in the earlier rounds, scored from a set play against the run of play as Walters bundled home after KC goalkeeper Junior Lawman failed to arrest the ball, in fact he didn’t even get a hand to it.
But with 35 minutes to be played on Saturday, it’s still a lot to play for as both teams fight for a spot in the final of the Walker Cup.
