Sandals Foundation helps to empower disabled youth
The Sandals Foundation in the Montego Bay region partnered with the Social Development Commission (SDC) and, by extension, the Cornwall Combined Disabilities Association Benevolent Society (CCDABS) to host a forum which sought to empower community members to include youths who are living with various forms of disabilities.
The forum, held at the SDC office in Montego Bay, welcomed six youths from communities within St James and Trelawny who were offered assistive technologies such as wheelchairs, crutches and a walker, as well as laptops which will serve to improve their ability to carry out daily tasks as well as assist with their long-term goals and interests.
Davina Brissett, a 15-year-old fourth former from Muschette High School and aspiring doctor who suffered third-degree burns that resulted in some major disfiguration to her body, was offered a laptop to better assist her with assignments and SBAs, as well as Tedo Tennant — who displays competence in technology and wishes to excel in information technology despite having a mental disability.
CCDABS President Andrew East explained that no one, whether abled or disabled should be hindered from reaching their full potential.
The CCDABS, along with the SDC, provides resources and opportunities for educational advancements to registered persons with disabilities, which will provide the continued prospect of personal and professional growth.
