KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency says that it has begun work to prevent further erosion of the main road between Orange Bay and Windsor Castle in Portland. 

The road, which is part of the North Coast Highway, was today closed in the vicinity of the tax office in Buff Bay, due to significant erosion, caused by rains.

Stephen Shaw, manager of communication and customer services at the NWA, said in a release this afternoon that workers had begun the process of protecting the sea wall in order to prevent a complete collapse of the remaining structure.

According to the NWA, boulders are now being used to reduce the impact of the waves on the wall, and the agency’s work will continue until nightfall.

Strong waves left the affected section of the roadway with a huge cavity today. 

Motorists travelling from the direction of Buff Bay Square to Port Antonio are reportedly being rerouted along East Norman Lane, then onto Lynch Park Road, exiting beside the Sports Complex.
