No fee increase for UWI, Mona students in September — Student Guild
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Guild of Students says it has received a commitment from the UWI that tuition fees will not be increased in the upcoming school year.
This afternoon, the Guild Council tweeted: “We have received commitment from the University Council that there will be NO increase in tuition for the 2017/2018 academic year”.
It also promised tuition relief for students who had their fees quoted in US dollars. Such students, among them law students, complained that these fees would perennially increase with the rising exchange rate.
However, the Guild also tweeted that they had received commitments that the fees would be quoted in Jamaican dollars going forward.
In a release today, Guild President Mikiela Gonzales claimed a victory, saying: “We are pleased to know the Vice Chancellor and University Council have heard the voices of the students. We are even more pleased that the administration has recognized our efforts in restoring trust and renewing inspiration for change, such that, they have recognized the value of the voice of this Guild.”
Gonzales said the Mona Campus was the only campus to face an increase in recent years, while bemoaning Jamaica’s economic conditions.
